Ayr is a town and port located on the Firth of Clyde. It was created a royal burgh since 1202. Ayr functions as the administrative center for the South Ayrshire Council. In 2002, it attempted to compete for city status with three other counties but lost to Stirling.
Ayr is a place that is rich in history dating back to the days of Bruce and Wallace until today as it plays a major role as a fishing and ship building town.
As a center for commerce, many industries, starting with its port, handling timber, coal, wind turbine parts and other commodities, have settled in Ayr. Close to the port, a wide range of companies engage in various businesses such confectionery, metal fabrication and others in between.
As a travel destination it is a vibrant place of leisure. Around the center of town, a delightful collection of shops and businesses abound, many of them are locally owned and operated. Dining in Ayr is a good mix of healthy, nutritious Scottish fare as well as available Chinese, Indian and other international cuisine, all at the most competitive prices. No other town can serve better fare and at a lower price than Ayr.
As proud as it is of it past, Ayr is ready for the future with new developments such as the recently completed shopping center with an overwhelming variety of shops.
